Tagging up on a pop fly explained..and a monkey!

Have you ever found yourself on base after a spectacular hit when you heard those ominous words; “Less than two out, so tag up if it’s in the air“? Does this statement strike fear, anxiety and/or a general state of confusion?

No worries! There’s a video for that!

Was this video helpful? Do I need to find better videos? Do I need to make a video? Let me know in the comments section.

have any other areas of softball that you would like to see covered? Let me know via the comments or Contact Us page.

See you Sunday! Remember, games start at noon.

Post game celebration…all the cool kids are going!

Talk about sponsor love!

The Company House, will now be opening its doors on Sundays between 2:00PM and 8:00PM for our softball league. There will be a BBQ and drink specials – Margaritas, Daiquiris & Caesars for $6, and Happy Hour beer for $4.25.

Can you think of a better way to spend an hour or two after your game bitching about that bad call, recounting that beauty play that turned the game around, or simply enjoying a cold bevvie with your most stellar teammates?  How about enjoying the summer “season” (and by season, I mean a day or so every month of intermittent sunshine) while helping support a local business, supporting one of our league sponsors, and getting to know other players in the league?

I don’t know about you, but I felt like this when I found out about this great news. Anybody want to buy the web geek a beer?

Still not convinced? Maybe it’s time to pull out the celebrity endorsement. When in doubt, I always ask myself; “What Would P!nk Do?

See you on the field!

June 19th, 2011 – GAMES CANCELLED

Hey everyone,
Unfortunately, HRM has closed all of their sports fields today due to the rain so there will be no games today. Stay tuned for an e-mail later on this week with updates for next weeks’ games.Corey

A force play or a force out explained…in great detail!

Ola! group.

This week’s video tutorials are very…Big Bang Theory inspired. The individual who submitted these two videos is very passionate about baseball. This is evident from the graphics used to explain a force out. That said, not my first pick for a tutorial video, but I heard a bit of rumbling about this concept, so best to explain it.

In short, a force play involves any situation where the runner (including the batter) is forced to run. A batter is forced to run to first base. having arrived at first safely, the runner is then forced to run to second if the subsequent batter hits the ball in fair play (see last week’s video). In this instance, you need only to throw the ball to the base where the runner is headed (e.g., first base,  second base, etc.) and your teammate need only catch it prior to the runner getting to the base. Note: In our league, home is always a forced out.  Clear as mud?

A tagged play necessitates tagging the runner in the instance where s/he is trying for an extra base or more. For example, if I am up to bat and hit the ball into the outfield, it’s a force play at first (because I am forced to run to first base), but a tagged play at second base (nice hit!), or third (getting greedy). Again, a play at home in our league will always be a force out for safety.  Still clear as mud?

Check out the videos below and let me know what you think of them:

So, this infield fly rule…and other softball rules

Didn’t get enough from last week’s video tutorials? No worries!

While watching the games last weekend, I noticed the umpire called a few people out on an infield fly. I also noticed this look from more than a few people (not pugs), so let’s crack a bevvie, pull up a comfortable chair, wipe down the white board and grab a pen – Professor YouTube is in session:

What is this infield fly rule exactly?

In other news, have you seen the new logo? My head nearly exploded from the sheer and utter awesomeness that was waiting for me in my inbox. This logo was done by a volunteer looking to flex some graphic design muscle. Huge, mad, and insane props to her for the ridiculous final product! If you like her work, hit me up for a referral.

Thanks to the brilliant effort of this year’s Commission, the league has been making steady improvements to many facets of a community organization, but they are far from done. If you have any feedback, insight, or want to help out, leave a comment here or head over to the Contact Us page and let ‘em know what’s on your mind. I promise to get back to you before the next game or I owe you a bevvie!

See you on the ball field!

New to softball? Here’s a video or five

Based on last Sunday’s practice, there is quite a group of people new to softball. This is great news!  During the practice, a pile of great questions were asked about the finer points of softball. To answer some of your questions, I dug up some videos from YouTube.com. They cover the basics of hitting, fielding, and running the bases.

HITTING:
How to grip a softball bat
How to hit a softball

FIELDING A BALL:
How to field a ground ball
How to catch a fly ball

RUNNING THE BASES:
Running through first base

Still have questions? With any luck, we will have a practice tomorrow and we can cover any and all questions that you may have.

Batters up & see you on the field!

Welcome to the new home of the ECRSA!

WELCOME! Come on in and take a look around. What do you think of the new site? After many years with the previous website, the Commission felt that it was time for a bit of a makeover for the 2011 season. Some of the new features of the website include:

* A re-organization of all existing information with separate pages for players new to the sport, players new to the league, league veterans and our awesome fans.

* A user-friendly interface that makes it easier than ever to contact the ECRSA Commission via this website, Facebook, Twitter, email or snail mail.

* An exportable calendar with the league schedule, tournament schedule, and other sponsor related events that can be downloaded to your iCal, Google calendar, or other web-based calendar.

* And.So.Much.More.

We are pretty stoked about this new website, and cannot wait to hear about what you like and what you would like to see changed. To start the conversation, please leave a comment here, or check out the contact us page.

See you on the field & game on!
