What is softball?

Softball is a great, social sport for a wide range of skill levels. Still curious? Check out this video from Softball Canada. For a more detailed overview of the rules of the game, the ECRSA rules may be helpful to you. If this doesn’t answer your questions, please contact us.

What do I need to play? (top)

In order to play, you will need:

  • Baseball Glove
  • Appropriate footwear (sneakers or non-metal cleats)
  • Appropriate pants or shorts
  • Water

You may also want to consider:

  • Hats and/or sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Softball bat
  • Batting helmet
  • Batter’s glove

What are the advantages of playing softball? (top)

  • A great way to get outdoors and take advantage of the sunshine
  • A great way to meet some awesome people
  • A great way to get out and get some exercise
  • A great way to get involved and volunteer with a community organization

Why play for the ECRSA? (top)

The ECRSA is an inclusive softball league, that emphasizes community engagement and fun. You don’t need to have any prior experience. We have team captains that will help you learn the basics of the game. The rest of it can be learned on the field. If you aren’t sure about the league, or you have any other questions, please contact us via email, Twitter or Facebook and we would be happy to chat.

New to the ECRSA

Where and when are games played? (top)

A majority of regular season games are played every Sunday at Merv Sullivan Park (the Pit) with the first game getting underway at 1:30pm every Sunday. A few games have been scheduled for the Commons, so be sure to check the online schedule.Click on the map below to plan your next trip to the field.

Is the field accessible by public transit? (top)

Yes, the field is accessible by public transit. To plan your trip to the weekly game, we recommend the HRM Metro Transit’s trip planner.

Where can I park my vehicle? (top)

Street parking is free on Sundays. Using Google maps, select the satellite view to gain a better perspective of available parking options.

How do I know if the game is cancelled due to weather conditions? (top)

We will announce any game cancellations via Twitter, Facebook, and this website by 11am every Sunday. If you don’t have access to the Internet, you can call the Halifax Recreation’s RAINOUT Hotline at 490-7100. Press 2 (Field Conditions), then Press 1 (“Western Region”).

What are the fees to play? (top)

The fees for the 2011 season are $85.00 per player. HRM more than doubled the fees for renting the fields over the winter. Luckily, with the continued support of our sponsors, the fee increase was kept to a minimum.

How many teams are in the league and who do I contact? (top)

This year, the ECRSA will field six teams. Each team is delegated two captains to coordinate practices, and ensure the overall functioning of the team. A list of the team captains can be found in PDF or MS Word.
