So, this infield fly rule…and other softball rules

Didn’t get enough from last week’s video tutorials? No worries!

While watching the games last weekend, I noticed the umpire called a few people out on an infield fly. I also noticed this look from more than a few people (not pugs), so let’s crack a bevvie, pull up a comfortable chair, wipe down the white board and grab a pen – Professor YouTube is in session:

What is this infield fly rule exactly?

The difference between a fair vs. foul ball (explained by an a certified umpire in uniform):

In other news, have you seen the new logo? My head nearly exploded from the sheer and utter awesomeness that was waiting for me in my inbox. This logo was done by a volunteer looking to flex some graphic design muscle. Huge, mad, and insane props to her for the ridiculous final product! If you like her work, hit me up for a referral.

Thanks to the brilliant effort of this year’s Commission, the league has been making steady improvements to many facets of a community organization, but they are far from done. If you have any feedback, insight, or want to help out, leave a comment here or head over to the Contact Us page and let ‘em know what’s on your mind. I promise to get back to you before the next game or I owe you a bevvie!

See you on the ball field!

  1. Hi Abby,
Great work with the website! Just wondering if a standings section is in the works (or, if it exists and I just can’t see it?)
    hanks,
    JB

    • Hi Jon!

Thanks for your kind words. A standings page is in the works. I am in the midst of structuring a Google Docs spreadsheet to automate the process, then embed the spreadsheet into a page much like the schedule. Fingers crossed for good geek karma this week!

It’s at the top of my priority list Jon.
      Cheers,
      AMc

  2. Sounds great, thanks!

  3. Hey there. In the past – our ECRSA had a specific rule about INFIELD POP-FLY OUTS. Ours was specifically ONLY 1 scenario when there is both:

    1. Runners on 1st AND 2nd (doesn’t matter about 3rd base)

    AND

    2. A team had only ZERO or ONE OUT(s) (If 2 outs, you HAVE to catch it to earn the third out)

The video went into scenarios about players on 1st base only, and also a scenario with 1st and 3rd bases, which was not previously in our league’s INFIELD POP-FLY OUT Rule.

Could you please post a copy of the RULES on the Website, so we know what this rule is.

    • Thanks for your feedback Curtis.

The ECRSA rules are currently under revision and I will be posting them to this site as soon as I receive them. In the interim, thanks for the clarification and insight. I will make sure to let you know as soon as I have the rules posted.

      Cheers.
      Abby
